Quantum Controls Provide Energy Savings at Swimming Pool Leisure Centres

Quantum Controls Ltd have recently supplied ABB , ACH variable speed drives on leisure centre swimming pools to give substantial KWH savings for the running costs and reduce the Carbon Footprint for local government council with funding provided through the Salix Scheme.

The pools were originally running on fixed speed motor pumps 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with substantial energy costs. Quantum were asked to look at energy saving and show how much KWH and CO2 could be saved.

An energy logger was placed on the existing fixed speed system and the KWH consumption was recorded over a 7 day period. A temporary ABB variable speed drive was then fitted to one of the pumps and the energy consumption logged again for a 1 week period.

Quantum used their none intrusive strap on flow meter to record flow rates and pool water turn round time at both fixed and variable speed control to make sure that the pool water quality and turn round time were not affected to any detrimental; level.

The results shown from the trial proved that during day time running the pump energy consumption fell to below 30% of the fixed speed and over 50% during the pool closed hours when the pump speed could be reduced even further.
