Prove the Savings on Your Application

The Energy Cost Problem

Energy costs can place significant pressure on manufacturing businesses. Electric motors are crucial to many commercial buildings and industrial processes, making motor applications an important area to investigate when assessing energy use.

Alongside the financial strain, electricity consumption also creates an environmental impact. Understanding how your equipment operates is the starting point for identifying opportunities to improve efficiency.

Facts, Not Fiction

Variable Speed Drives can deliver substantial savings on suitable motor applications, but a basic calculator relies on assumptions about the motor and its operating conditions.

Quantum’s Try-Before-You-Buy approach lets you trial a drive on your own application, measure the results and review the evidence before deciding whether to purchase or lease.

How Does It Work?

Try a Variable Speed Drive on your application, on your site, without committing to an up-front purchase.

  1. Data Collection

Discuss your motor application with our engineers and collect the information needed for the assessment.

  2. Temporary Installation

Trial a temporary Variable Speed Drive on your own equipment under site operating conditions.

  3. Detailed Report

Review the trial results and a detailed report showing the savings identified for your application.

  4. Choose Your Option

Use the measured results to decide whether an outright purchase or long-term lease suits your company.

Pump & Fan Speed Matters

Cube law describes the relationship between centrifugal pump or fan speed and power demand. A modest reduction in speed can offer significant savings on suitable applications. The on-site trial establishes how your equipment performs while meeting the needs of your process.

Glass Manufacturer: 250 kW Quench Fan

£114,903 Annual energy saving identified in the trial
£18,987 Drive supply, installation and commissioning cost
2 months Reported purchase payback period

A UK-based glass manufacturer contacted Quantum to ask whether we could help reduce their soaring energy costs. We discussed our Try-Before-You-Buy scheme and agreed on a trial of their 250 kW Quench Fan, the largest motor application they had on site.

The trial identified an annual energy saving of £114,903 through installing a new drive on the application. The supply, installation and commissioning price was £18,987, giving a reported payback period of two months.

The client did not have the capital to invest up front, so Quantum offered the drive on a long-term lease at £450 per week, equivalent to £23,400 per annum.

Benefits of the Agreed Lease Package

  • Zero initial capital outlay
  • Energy savings established through the trial
  • Schneider VSD hardware serviced annually for free
  • Unlimited 24/7 technical support from fully qualified Drive Service Engineers
  • Immediate engineer-to-site cover for drive problems
  • No asset value depreciation

Energy Savings in Practice

Induced Draught Fan

£182,076.60 Reported annual saving

Our customer asked us to identify the potential savings of an Induced Draught fan operating with a mechanical damper and running 24/7.

The 110 kW fan went from 99.66 kW absorbed power to 16.52 kW, reducing annual running costs from £218,255.40 to £36,178.80.

Figures were calculated using the case-study electricity tariff of 25p per kWh.

Anaerobic Digestion Plant

£267,500 Reported annual electricity saving

A water framework partner needed to resolve foaming on an Advanced Anaerobic Digestor plant. Using hire equipment, we identified 38 Hz as the ideal operating point for the 90 kW mixer pumps.

The foam disappeared without a change in mixing quality. The case study also reported gas that was 22% drier, 22% more gas production and no further need to spend £3,000 per week on anti-foam chemicals.

The reduced pump speed saved £267,500 per year on electricity alone, based on 25p per kWh.

Power Generation Fans

£189,531 Reported annual saving

A power generation service contract customer had upgraded much of its site equipment, but its hot air primary, cold air primary and secondary air fans had not been upgraded to VSD control.

Installing Variable Speed Drives reduced consumption by 114,106 kWh, 273,370 kWh and 370,648 kWh respectively.

The combined reduction was 758,124 kWh, equating to an annual saving of £189,531 and a reported three-month return on investment.
