Quantum Controls win the Technical Innovation of the Year Project at National Pump Industry Awards

Last month at the Pump Industry Awards 2012, which took place at The St John’s Hotel in Solihull, West Midlands, Quantum Controls won the Technical Innovation of the Year Project with ABB.

The awards are the highest acclaimed celebration of excellence in the pump and related product industry, and the evening was an impressive tribute to the people and companies operating within this marketplace. Attracting some of the most influential names in the industry, 250 professionals were in attendance at this glittering evening of networking and celebration to mark the achievements of both companies and individuals within this industry.

The award which was sponsored by Sterling Fluid Systems was for the installation of AC Drives on Anaerobic Digester.  An anaerobic digester uses micro-organisms to break down biodegradable material such as sewage waste. Northumbrian Water was experiencing a problem with the pumps on the anaerobic digester at Bran Sands sewage treatment works. Northumbrian Water and Quantum Controls investigated whether it could achieve a form of pump control that would prevent the foaming. Two ABB low voltage AC drives were fitted to one of the digester tanks which give the ability to reduce the motor speeds, avoiding the foaming.

The awards themselves are voted for by readers of specialist industry publications and visitors to the pump industry awards website. The voters can select for a number of candidates that have been shortlisted by a panel of experts who work with the Pump Industry Awards board, these generally come from the major manufacturers and water companies. The shortlisting is done through a score based system to ensure an unbiased approach is taken.

Read more on our project with Northumbrian Water and how we helped them to save £100,000 energy costs with ABB drives.

We also came runners up in Environmental Contribution of the Year with the same project.

DC to AC Conversion wins prestigious 2011 ‘innovative energy reduction project’

Viridor have been announced as the 2011 winner for the Quantum Controls CO2 reducing project of the Year Award run in conjunction with ABB.

Viridor - 2011 energy winner

This award looks at new installation and refurbishment projects utilising energy efficient motors and variable speed drives carried out by Quantum Controls Ltd. It recognised entries from all industries and organizations that have installed new drives and motors thus achieving an on-going reduction in their energy / CO2 usage.

A saving of £50k a year has been achieved on a single extrusion machine after the conversation from DC to AC ABB Variable Speed Drives and Motors.

Viridor Recycling, based in Skelmsdale, is one of the largest plastic recyclers in the UK and produces products for a range of leading brand products.  Manish Chahwala, chief engineer and energy manager with the company, says: “Quantum Controls had been recommended to me, I heard they had vast experience in installing DC to AC conversions within the plastics industry and this gave me confidence in the company and its abilities.”

Manish asked Quantum Controls to perform a site survey, which logged energy use data and identified several applications that could reduce their energy consumption. A 500Kw DC machine was identified. “Quantum proposed a package of AC Variable Speed Drive and Motor to hire and prove the savings that could be achieved before we needed to actually invest in new equipment thus taking any risk out of the project for Viridor’

Once the savings shad been proved with temporary hire equipment Viridor procured the permanent installation, Quantum Controls installed a 500kW ABB ACS800 drive and ABB AC Motor on the main extrusion machine, saving over 2376 kW hours a day, giving an energy cost saving of just over £50,000 a year and a payback time of under 16 months.

Manish adds: “We are very delighted with the savings made and we have a rolling program converting our DC machines to AC with Quantum as our turnkey supplier.”

As the 2011 winner Viridor have won a trip to the Largest Variable Speed Drives and Motor factory in the world at ABB Helsinki, Finland.  A Full itinerary covering all aspects of ABB drives and motors product range will be covered over the two days along with full factory tour including introduction to the world’s largest R&D centre for Drives and Motors.

‘We are delighted to have Viridor as the winner of the 2012 award’, says Steve Hughes, UK Sales Manager for ABB Drives. ‘Viridor took an unusual application to assess potential savings, hiring a drive from Quantum Controls to prove the actual savings meant that they were in possession of the factual data following before and after data logging.

Waste Not, Want Not – Commending Energy Efficient Tactics

Our climate is beginning to display the adverse symptoms of excessive energy use, as the storage of finite natural resources continually depletes; the news of any energy conservation strategy comes as a welcome progression towards the wider adoption of gentler, more sustainable solutions.

At Quantum Controls we believe that every energy efficient centred project deserves praise and recognition, not only because they have actively opted for an ethical alternative but also because they have set foot along a new greener path that will hopefully encourage many more to follow suit.

Quantum Controls are particularly receptive to the news of energy efficient projects, products and inventions because we specialise in supplying energy efficient variable speed motors and drives. We are therefore perfectly positioned to take a proactive approach when it comes to energy conservation. Motors and drives absorb 75% of all energy in UK industries. Our motors and drives work to reduce waste energy without compromising on the all-important end results, so customers benefit from reduced costs, while the environment is saved from the needless drain on its resources.

The recent news that the electrical giant, Samsung is to pioneer a European offshore wind farm in the Methil energy park site, on the Fife coastline, to test and build a 7 Megawatt turbine, comes as a major merit making move. Samsung Heavy Industries have demonstrated a real commitment to low-carbon energy, as they diversify, investing a huge £100 million into the project and creating 500 extra jobs in renewable energy. It shows how serious they are when it comes to making their mark in sustainable power. As an added bonus Scotland’s profile will be elevated as they accommodate Samsung’s new surge in sustainable power.
A Korean based firm selecting Fife as their first base in Europe for renewable technology development reveals Scotland and the UK’s miles of coastline as one of the guiding lights in new offshore wind technologies. Huge companies such as Samsung are perfect candidates to pioneer worthy projects like these, as their existing kudos commands global attention.
Samsung’s decision to acknowledge the benefits of sustainable power immediately boosts their reputation as a considerate, forward thinking corporation. This is proven by positive reactions such as, “This investment will create jobs and help reduce carbon emissions, making it excellent news for Fife, for Scotland and for the environment.” This comment by Dr Richard Dixon, director of the Charity WWF Scotland, reveals the wide reaching benefits that the scheme will bring.

Operating in an industry that revolves around the output of energy, Quantum Controls Ltd. feel perfectly positioned to make a difference when it comes to tackling the serious issue of energy conservation. Just as all energy projects work in the interests of an individual company as well as a wider environmental context.
To make life easier and avoid an upfront purchase of equipment, we have launched a Lease and Save Scheme, which allows you to install energy saving systems by structuring your payments so that the lease cost is always significantly less than the energy savings. The energy efficient motors offer an immediate CO2 reduction that sees an industry’s carbon footprint shrink, together with energy costs, which are subject to constant increase. We pride ourselves on providing energy efficient products that cleverly minimise waste without compromising on results.

You can also apply for Energy Efficiency loans from the Carbon Trust, which is a cost effective way to replace or upgrade existing equipment with a more energy efficient version. We’re more than happy provide further details about the interest-free loans offered by The Carbon Trust and assist you with the completion of your application, so you can steer yourself onwards to a greener road.
The emergence of a new energy saving development is a step nearer to a complete shift in attitude. It should be recognised and praised, so we can begin to look forward to a sustainable future.

Join the revolution and minimise the environmental impact where you can. If you operate in an industry that relies upon the power of variable speed drives and motors, call us today on 0330 9000 247 and reconsider your options to see how you can reduce your costs and gain respect.
